Visiting Ashburton and the Local Area

Nestled on the southern edge of Dartmoor, Ashburton is one of Devon’s most vibrant and characterful market towns. Rich in history and full of independent spirit, it’s a place where creativity, food, and countryside come together beautifully.

Wander along North Street and you’ll find an inspiring mix of independent shops, galleries and artisan businesses. From photography and fine art to jewellery and handcrafted design, Ashburton celebrates creativity at every turn — including our own gallery at 32 North Street.

Ashburton is also renowned for its food. Home to the internationally acclaimed Ashburton Cookery School, the town offers an exceptional selection of independent food producers and specialists — including artisan bakers, traditional butchers, delicatessens, a chocolate shop and even a specialist ice cream maker. It’s a true destination for food lovers.

Perfectly placed for exploring South Devon, Ashburton is an ideal base for a holiday. Dartmoor National Park is just minutes away, offering wide open landscapes and dramatic scenery, while the South Devon coast can be reached in around 25 minutes.

There’s a wide choice of places to eat and stay, from cosy cafés and welcoming pubs to excellent restaurants. Accommodation ranges from charming cottages to boutique hotels and friendly B&Bs.
